My neighbour on wheelchair

My neighbour. When we moved in some 11 years ago, he was a healthy middle aged man who chatted with me if we were waiting for the lift, he told me he has two daughters.

A few years later, I noticed a ramp built outside his unit. I later learnt he had both legs amputated and moved about in a wheelchair. We exchanged hi-byes and didn't talk much beyond that. His daily routine for dinner was that he would travel in his motorized wheelchair to the 201 hawker for dinner with his friends about about 6.45pm, and return two hours later. On a few occasions, it was pouring and I was concerned why he decided to head out despite the rain. Once, he insisted to head out because "my friends are waiting for me". Once or twice when the lift broke down and he had no food at home, I offered to Grab food for him. I remembered a packet of chicken rice to his doorstep costed $15, but paying a premium seemed the only option.

I eventually realised the reason why he always headed out for dinner - his daughter who used to stay with him had moved out to be closer to her workplace, whilst his wife worked unusual hours. In Feb 2026, his wheelchair battery was dead and replacement could only be done in a few days' time. With no one to turn to, he called me for help.

First, he requested for Hokkien mee from 201.
Then, it was hor fun on CNY day 3. We were out so I ordered Grab but they cancelled on me (shortage of riders as it was raining cats and dogs and being CNY) last minute, I dabaoed from a coffeeshop otw home. It was 10ish pm by the time he ate.
Next, he asked for siew mai and 大包. "Remember put chilli," he called me twice to remind.
His wheelchair was repaired after that, thankfully.

Not long after, I received a call from him again during a work day. He asked if I was at home, if I could help him troubleshoot his TV which was not emitting sound. I was legit at work, and I told him that.

Last week, I saw a WhatsApp notification from him. Wondered if he needed help again? It was a picture message that surfaced:

😢

That explained why he looked more frail and listless lately....

He was already sick to begin with.... I feel sad for him of the quality of his last days... Ppl dream of happy times with family members but I believe he didn't have it that way unfortunately.
Got money really doesn't mean anything if you don't have (fairly) good health and the company of loved ones who genuinely care for you.
In a way I feel thankful that I managed to buy food for him last month of his requests - hor fun, siew mai and big bun, hokkien mee. These were meals which gave him comfort. I'm glad I had helped him in my capacity. RIP Mr Chia.

Capturing this moment about life

It's 2+am, I'm lounging on the sofa watching Netflix (because Tottenham is getting badly thrashed by Liv is not worth watching), wind's coming in through the windows (it's always like this this time of the year). I just had a can of beer, wife and kids are asleep, we spent a fine time together today, I'm not dreading the Monday tomorrow as I'm on leave -

When I play back today's moments of my cute girls' innocent hearty laughter and adorable smiles, my heart feels content. Inner peace, inner balance.

This moment. This exact moment. Everything is well. All is well. And this is good. This, is good. Is this life? Is this what life can be and what life should be? If it is, I'm loving life, I'm loving this very moment. ♥️

Catch-up with ex colleagues

Had a mini gathering of sorts with several ex colleagues on 30 Aug. All but two are no longer with $mrt. Special guest of the day was Yeo MH. Needless to say, we caught up with one another and shared a joke or two.

A takeaway from the session:

  • HOW I DO NOT MISS BUS WORKSHOP AT ALL - Jon was picking up calls from my ex-boss (still current staff) See BH and shared the number of VOR buses at KRJ Depot was so high, there was insufficient parking space. The culprit? The engine of the double deck ADL buses... the first double deckers owned and operated by $mrt, the model that we 假厉害 and brought into Sg as the industry-first. At that time, noticeably playing catch-up was the lack of local presence and after-sales support. How am I not surprised that after 10+ years, the situation has not improved by much? And maintenance being maintenance, users will be looking at you to resolve the problem, this is an example of many external factors beyond my control which extremely frustrated me then. Furthermore, the nature of bus wksp is very operational-based and doesn't allow the mind to "switch off"... I am massively thankful I left before I started a family.

Cute innocence of my kids

Me when I return home after a day at work:

I go to the bathroom to wash my feet and hands. Kids follow behind me and tell me how they "killed a bug without an adult's help for the first time", they were in the shower when they spotted a bug, Yx sprayed water on it until it fell onto the floor. The bug "didn't know where the floor trap was" and it swam towards and down it went.

Hahaha honestly I'm not very entertained by this kind of trivia event but I take one step back and tell myself how cute they are, how significant an event they must have felt it was that their parents needed to know.

Blessed to be in their company, witnessing their innocence, laughter and naivety.

Ye also at this age of asking the weirdest questions:

"Why do people get married?"
"Why do people grow tall?"
"Why do we need to eat?"
"Why do we need to sleep at night?"

🤣

Sunday night reflection - Baking with Nainai

Wifey needed to rest her hands so I brought the girls out for lunch at White Sands. Ye did a Slidey Dumptey at Saizeriya (she slid down the cushioned seat and sat on the floor underneath the table lol it was super hilarious cos she was halfway in her sentence "姐,你记得。。。 *plonk!*“ ) lol, then we spent about 40mins at the library followed by 20mins at Pets Corner where the girls just erm, watched the animals 😂

Both girls were v cooperative throughout and I enjoyed their company. They've recently grown closer together and are each other's closest chit chat and singing buddies. I need to commend Yx the most as she is the most thoughtful and helpful sis: offering to take ye's mask; lending a hand when I commented I had too many bags to take by myself; holding ye's hand while guiding her through the carpark. Love them both so much!

Mom was available that afternoon and so we headed over for baking session! Magicmom bathed and changed them, involved the girls in the baking (whilst dad took pics and a vid), prepared tea break for them, and also cooked dinner for all of us.

Amazing energy mom still possesses. We're all so blessed with her showering love and may my parents be blessed with good health for many, many more decades. ❤️

Sunday nights are for reflection

I love the peaceful and quiet of Sunday nights. Sunday late nights. How late, late like, after the last Sunday match of EPL kinda-late.

It's an ideal time to do some reflection of how the weekend went past. Weekends pass by so quickly for us, activity after activity, meal after meal. A swift passing weekend, actually, is a fortunate event. It only passed by so quickly is because one is not burdened by worries, not dragged down by chores, not bogged down by obligations.

Just thought I'll pen down the things I'm grateful for for the weekend that just zoomed by:

- That no one is sick, obviously
- Happy and cute girls who are beginning to be able to play together more and more
- 30 mins of Busy Books play with #wyx7.
- Started Sunday early, met Ct Christy and their boys at ECP and caught up abit
- Girls were entertained by my silly idea of drawing a face on their plates with vege
- My girls are so cute and chuckle and funny
- And last but not least!

TOP OF THE LEAGUE!

A night at Wheeler's (without restrictions)

A moment to remember
Of stimulated senses
There were:
Chilled beer swirling in my tummy
Live music ringing in my ears
My arms wrapped by my daughters' clutch
Family chatter in the background
Head bobbing to the beat
Masks off
Tables of crowd
Dining and singing, cheering along
Laughter
Toddlers' wails
Metal cutlery and porcelain plates clashing
2 years of COVID erased from our minds momentarily, as if it'd never happened
I felt alive
I felt happy
I felt human
I felt contentment
I felt appreciative
Family
Food
Fun
Health
Music
Financial no worries
Thank u creator
For giving me this moment
This moment to cherish
This moment to remember

Life lessons

This person shares 3 lessons he learned while his plane crashed:

1) Everything can change in an instant

2) Remove negativity from your life

3) Be the best parent that you can

So apt, in light of the passing of a few good people already this year...

How much longer do we want to take our lives for granted?

2017 review

2017 passed by in a flash, didn't it! It doesn't seem too long ago that I was penning down my review for 2016 and in a twinkling of an eye, it was December already.... man.

Looking back at my resolutions set for 2017:

Resolutions for 2017:

1) Maintain silver for IPPT

Result - I am guilty of not training for it. Or rightly, not training sufficiently for it. Knowing I fare worst at push ups, I only focused on training for push ups and nothing else. For previous years I used to train for sit ups, but this year I didn't cos I thought I'll scrap through (which I did); I ran twice (the first 2 months before IPPT, the other 2 days before, and the latter gave me leg muscle aches which didn't recuperate in time). Thus during my 2.4km run my pre-existing muscle aches were so bad I stopped to brisk walk a couple of times and it resulted in a miserable timing. But haha, the advantage of the revamped IPPT system is that the margin between silver and pass with incentive is very broad - I could even run 2 mins slower and still attain pass with incentive. Okay all in all, lessons learnt, I can no longer depend on weekly futsal sessions as stamina training, and I need to train in push ups and sit ups in future. Bah. Old liao :(

2) Travel!

Result - as compared to only once in 2016, we travelled significantly more in 2017! Penang, cruise, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and a few trips across the causeway. More about them in the month by month summary to follow.

3) Challenge myself at work

Result - did a little more in CCAs (Employment Engagement Survey, Futures Advance) but failed to grow as much as I would like to in the technical aspect. Projects were dull and mundane and learning opportunities were limited.

4) More outdoor activities with family

Result - Went Pasir Ris park, Cafe Melba, Marina Barrage, Sunplaza Park, visits to the neighbourhood playground... Not bad ba? Otherwise it's really sian to head outdoors given that Singapore's weather is mostly >30 deg C, I mean, you can't expect us to lay out a mat at east coast park and have a picnic as and when we want?

5) Contribute to society -

Result - Yeap! More about that in 'May' summary.

 -------------------------------------

Highlights of 2017:

January

- Yx walks independently!

I bumped into my primary school classmate who shared that her daughter started walking only after they brought her to a huge grass patch in Perth. The theory was that in such an environment, they are less afraid of falling. One weekend we brought yx to UE Biz Hub where we allowed yx to roam the NTUC aisles and the outdoors. After that day yx began to walk independently, hurray!

- Penang

Quite a pre-CNY spontaneous trip with a family of 4, we stayed together in a beautiful Airbnb apartment overlooking the straits and Penang Bridge. It was fun yet not the most relaxing. Although we couldn't cover as many places as we wanted to it was good we had one another for company and if we need a reminder we're not suffering the worst as parents we could just look at the other family, haha.

February

A vacation we booked vvvv long ago finally arrived! We were excited from the sharing by my parents of the endless activities, places to explore and the 24/7 restaurants and cafes. Prior to this, wifey has never gone on a cruise before whereas my last and only was on Star Cruise in 2001. Royal Carribean Cruises, my parents said, is on a completely different level as Star Cruise. Indeed, despite having a baby in toll we enjoyed the time to ourselves and in our compact yet comfortable cabin room, and being pampered by the meticulous staff who took care of the finest details.

April

- Work trip

Was I excited to embark on my first overseas work trip at my present job! And the destination was to the US, lagi excited! We didn't have a packed schedule and I really enjoyed the mini holiday in a familiar city. Of course, I love plane rides and a short transit at Narita made it more enjoyable.

Factory Acceptance Test

- Hong Kong vacation

Our Krisflyer miles was expiring so we redeemed 2 adult air tickets to HK. We covered many famous eateries and my personal highlight was the scenic trek along Dragon's Back Trail. Otherwise, we didn't have much to do in between and we found ourselves in a museum and queueing to get up The Peak (again)... -_-"

May

My Ukulele AIG was losing steam with no new activities to look forward to. With only the intention to provide some company to elderly folk through music, I invited like-minded colleagues to join us and we received overwhelming response - on the actual day, we had a total of 5 AIGs (uke, balloon, zumba, baking/cooking, photography) comprising about 30 members creating a memorable day for the elderly at KC Happy Lodge! It was very well received and many residents urged us to make it an annual affair.

Little did I expect that my effort in coordinating and promoting this inaugural ground-up CSR initiative would see me receive a SPICE@Work Award (one of a few recipients) for modelling exemplary core values :)

July

Happy like a bird to receive news of my promotion! Numbers wise the pay jump isn't fantastic at all but any increment is welcome la, plus the promotion is a positive affirmation of my contribution at work.

At a biannual WCACEF it was a pleasure to be Liaison Officer to a guest from a very interesting country, so interesting I have to google again to get the name correctly - St. Kitts and Nevis. This was her first time here and I was proud to play part-time tour guide too. I was also LO to a guest from Laos, but he was so familiar with SG and his regional counterparts, most of the time he stuck to his kawan kawan and devised their own plans.

Celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary cum wifey's bday by having a local staycation and toured the area on foot and MRT, like tourists.

Some internationally recognised and preserved building at the back

The popular Man Man jap restaurant was a stone's throw away but when we got there next day around noon to find there was already a queue! Chanced upon a cosy book cafe and spent some time inside. Had lunch at Toa Payoh where a blogger I was following recently opened a stall selling her own recipe of halal prawn mee (which later turned out to be a hit and has appeared on media and everywhere).

We also spent a staycation with wifey's family at Capella Sentosa Hotel, boy it was the most comfortable and beautiful room ever!

September

Yx turns 2:

October

Short getaway to Khao Yai and Bkk. 4d3n not enough leh. Haha.

November

My parents went for their holiday so we brought yx for a staycation near Hello Kitty Town.

Okay la on the whole it's quite fun, the shows were good and it's more value for money if your kid likes exploring indoor playgrounds. But the stretch of F&B along Puteri Harbour makes it ideal for an affordable, stress-free staycation.

December

- My birthday

Failed attempt at recording her wishing me 'happy bday', during our daily morning bonding otw to my parents' home

-------------------------------

Ending this review with a list of actionables and "resolutions" for 2018:

- Go for a family holiday
- Attain Silver for IPPT
- Create and update a master copy of all my insurance and investment plans
- Extract my remaining 2 wisdom tooth
- Bless Yx with a sibling, god willing.

Wish you all good health and a smooth sailing year. See you all next year!

Thank you 2016

Hello hello. Waaaaaaaaaaay outdated post, but better late than never! =P

2016 – A relatively uneventful year as compared to the previous years! Theme of 2016 has to be undeniably ‘Family’:

Weekends and weeknights were precious moments doing little but witnessing babywyx’s milestones, learning of new words, flipping over and sitting up on her own. We travelled overseas only once (thrice, if you consider JB); spent more time indoors; were less adventurous at planning activities; stuck to daily routine most of the time – for every babywyx’s little steps and every vocab we were reluctant to miss!

In addition, ‘Family’ deserves high mention in 2016 as my parents played (still playing) an influential role at being primary caretakers for babywyx on weekdays; not forgetting wifey too, for supporting my weekly Sat footy sessions.

Last but not least, my mom had a health scare in late 2016 and this episode served a reminder not to take our health and one another for granted! So thank you, my Family, for providing in my life as well as giving me motivation in life. :)

In 2016, thanks to my company for organising, I found time to volunteer too. Once as a 'tour guide' for disadvantaged primary school students at River Safari, and another as a food packer at Food for the Heart.

Walked River Safari so many times I'm probably not visiting again in the next 10 years

Here's a review of the resolutions set out for 2016:

To be achieved in 2016:

a) Silver for IPPT (no slacking this time!). Am considering a weekly gym session to buff myself up a little. Strangely lost 3 kg since 12 Sep!

- ACHIEVED! HURRAY!! After the letdown in 2015, I was sure not to underestimate the revised IPPT and so I trained earlier and more consistently. I hate running so all thanks to weekly soccer for helping me maintain my stamina at ~12mins for 2.4km! Alas, failed to turn up at the gym and also failed to gain any weight since. Advice, anyone?

b) Earn more passive income (dispose lousy unit trust funds and channel into stable blue-chips)

Sold off some penny stocks and redistributed into better investment products.

c) Teach babywyx to be able to sing ABC song by Dec 2016

MUAHAHA overly ambitious I was, wasn’t I? 15 months isn’t the age when a baby can sing – but hey babywyx surprised me with her other abilities like understanding of simple sentences, recognition of a huge vocab list, good direction sense and excellent memory!

d) Far-fetched wish to go on a Perth road-trip…

Far-fetched, indeed. With a LO in toll it really isn’t as straightforward as before, to just book tickets, take leave and fly. Much considerations have to be put into the choice of destination, for example street cleanliness, baby-friendly malls, water hygiene, tourist safety, language barrier etc… No doubt Perth is a baby-friendly city but the plane journey takes >5 hours and we’re noobish parents – let’s start off with somewhere nearer.

---------------------------------------

A quick monthly recap of 2016 highlights:

Jan –
RMJ started the year bright with ideas and passion to venture into a sideline. We met a couple of times to brainstorm our proposals, and started talking with the industry and friends to seek opinion and experience. Alas, none of us is exceptionally motivated towards making it happen and all discussions died down after 2-3 months. Partially why our discussions did not continue was because Jx and I had our family commitments. 1 year later of RMJ, one is a father of two and another is $20,000 richer (courtesy of Carlsberg) – I think we’re contented in our comfort zones for now.

Feb – Airshow.
Good experience serving as a chaperone to my guest from Brunei. Had the opportunity to play good host and through the process, also befriended handful of colleagues from other Divisions, who otherwise I wouldn't have gotten to talk to at all. The food was lovely too, and we got to enjoy watching the aerial performance from the VIP gallery :D

Can has fun @ work too!

Apr –
picked up Ukulele. Have similar experience in zhongruan, so picking up the ukulele came as second nature. Difference is, there are more fun songs to play with the Uke plus more youtube tutorials. Finally a hobby cum pastime I can do at home, besides caring for my kid.

Completion of Intermediate class

May – Taiwan.
No sightseeing, no exciting activities, no adventurous food involved - super comfy hotel stay was the main attraction. Haha.

Aug – Traded in Blackie for a brand new SUV. Finally, a car of my own!!!

Pardon the colour mismatch - the new car was delivered to our place and I really did go down to the carpark in my home clothes.

Learnt a fair bit about things to look out for when purchasing a car from a PI, for e.g. do your homework on the PI, and don't be shy to nego for a better deal.

Sep – Babywyx turned 1!
Simple affair with family and close friends.

Also in Sep - wifey was in between jobs so we took a day off from babywyx to R&R across the causeway. Went for thai massage, dined cheap and good food, did shopping and took leisurely strolls - simple activities but we felt recharged after that!

Dec – My birthday.
Lucky and hardworking me kept checking Teppei's online reservation website and finally booked a slot - my virgin experience at Omakase and a memorable one!

Say "Aaaaaaa..."

-----------------------------------------

Resolutions for 2017:

1) Maintain silver for IPPT – no need for elaboration.

2) Travel!
Penang in Jan, Cruise in Feb! How about HK, Korea??! Travel! Penang in Jan, Cruise in Feb! One another holiday will be very very nice! Perth, Korea??! Honestly not harbouring high hopes of any happening…

3) Challenge myself at work

I cherish the mornings nowadays when I would stroll to my cubicle and slump in my office chair, feeling secure behind my monitor and high partitions (Note: high partition cubes are endangered already!). Slowly, I would make myself a hot cup of coffee and check my emails at my own leisurely pace without any external interference at all. Man, this personal time and space are DIVINE shiokness.

For the rest of the day, I would be working on my tender documents, or attending a meeting here and there, or having site inspections or discussions with vendors. I meet deadlines with ease. I admit I can do much more. This year, I shall seek more opportunities to increase my technical know-how and expand my network. Translating this into tangible actions:

a. Attend more factory tests to understand systems and equipment
b. Seek to be more involved in new projects
c. Increase exposure to senior management e.g. volunteering to take up CCA/adhoc projects

d. Continue to look out for external courses/workshops/seminar on related topics

4) More outdoor activities with family

More outdoor (that is, environment not as ‘safe’ as our home) activities with family: Now that babywyx is more mobile, I hope to be able to head out more for her to hone her senses and explore her physical limits!

5) Contribute to society -
My employer recently implemented a 1-day Volunteer Leave wef this year. Perhaps I can make good use of this?

-----------

Signing off 2016!
Wishing everyone good health, cherished family moments and peace at heart! :)

This blog is 10 years old!

What one can do in 10 years:
  • Graduate with both PSLE and GCE 'O' level certs
  • Fully depreciate a brand new car
  • Live through the full teenage years and become a young adult e.g 12yo to 22yo
  • Be a proud recipient of Long Service Award from one's employer
  • Date, marry and become a parent of 3 (or even more)
  • Create one's first musical masterpiece like Mozart
  • Grow a tree
What I did -
Maintain a (frequently updated) blog. 935 posts in 10 years... That averages out to 94 posts per year; or 8 posts per month. Not too shabby!

So my first post was created on 20 Oct 2006!

I remember it was a weekday afternoon and I was feeling bored at Computer Centre at NUS. 10 years ago, smart phones have not taken over the world and the Comp Centre was DA PLACE TO GO if one needed to login into IVLE, download/print lecture notes, reply emails, catch up on football results etc! Wow, suddenly it feels like smart phone technology has since advanced way beyond imagination:

Think - in 2006 iPhone was unheard of; I was using Sony Ericsson that took pretty awesome 2MP pictures (who later become 'Sony'  in 2012 after Sony acquired Ericsson);

versus

Now - iPhone is now at series 7+, capable of 12MP wide-angle pictures!

Anyway, I digressed. I was feeling bored and created a blog out of fun... and then the blog became my journal, joke sharing forum, ranting outlet, gradually transforming into a platform for reflection, yearly review, archive of useful advices etc.

Browsed my archives to read back at my posts 10 years ago, boy o boy, those activities I did and photos I took are very much vivid in my mind!

Sharing a photo I took on the train on the way to school on Oct 23, 2016:

Commuters busy with the free newspapers given out at MRT stations

What the same place same time will resemble nowadays -

(Source: Google images)
What about in 2026? How will technology and lifestyle evolve?

.
.
.
.
.
.
.

What will happen to iPhone?
Google glass (or the like) will be omnipresent?
Fully electric public transport and private cars?

Tune in 10 years later!

---------------

I don't know what I'll be doing 10 years later... except for one fact that I'll be parenting yx who will be in Primary 5. But I'm hoping Blogger will continue to exist!
